2. Meet by video

We go over your situation together on a video call, so you never need to drive anywhere.

3. We prepare and e-file

Your return is prepared with care and e-filed through our IRS e-file authorization. You review it before it goes out.

About Tax Prep

Tax Prep by Curiosity Ventures LLC prepares individual, family, and small-business tax returns and helps you understand them. We believe a tax return should never be a mystery.

Along with preparing your return, we take time to explain what is on it and why: how your refund or balance due was figured, which documents matter, and how life changes such as marriage, a new dependent, or self-employment affect your taxes. Our goal is that next year feels easier than this one.

EDUCATION

Using Retirement Funds to Start a Business (ROBS)

Learn how a Rollover as Business Startup (ROBS) works: how some owners roll an existing 401(k) into funding for their own business without early-withdrawal taxes or penalties when it is set up correctly, what the rules and risks are, and what to ask before deciding. [IRS source: ROBS]

This is education only. ROBS decisions are made with your attorney, tax professional, and a qualified ROBS administrator, and we will connect you with the right ones.

Every [IRS source] link opens an official IRS.gov page so you can double-check the information yourself.

Advising and education sessions are separate from return preparation. We will confirm the fee with you before any work begins.

Starting a Business? Know What Helps

NEW BUSINESS OWNERS

First-Year Start-Up Deductions

A new business can elect to deduct up to $5,000 of start-up costs and up to $5,000 of organizational costs, which can add up to $10,000 in the first year. Each amount shrinks once total costs pass $50,000, and any remaining costs are spread out over time. [IRS source: Pub. 583]

This applies to qualifying costs you actually paid, not a flat write-off, and organizational costs depend on how your business is structured. We will help you work out what qualifies.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS

Starting Young in Wisconsin

Wisconsin law bars cities, villages, towns and counties from requiring a license, permit or fee for an occasional stand run by someone under 18, such as a lemonade or craft stand, when it sells goods (not potentially hazardous food) directly to consumers on private property with the owner’s permission. [Wis. Stat. 66.0416]

Separately, Wisconsin college and technical students age 18 or older can have the $130 LLC filing fee waived when forming a student-run LLC. [WI DFI]

Money a young person earns from a business can still need to be reported on a tax return. We can walk families through it.
